Highlights of CPH2000 Final Result in Catanduanes

Population expected to increase by 1.33 percent annually....
The total population of Catanduanes, as of May 1, 2000, was 215,356 persons. This implies an increase of 12,892 persons over the 1995 census figure or an average annual population growth rate of 1.33 percent, slightly lower (0.17 percentage point) than the annual population growth rate during the 1990 to 1995 period. A corresponding increase on the number of households was also recorded at 41,019 households, higher by 2,697 households over the 1995 figure. This resulted to an average household size of 5.25 persons, slightly lower than the average household size (5.28 persons) recorded five years ago.

The population of the province will double after fifty-two years ....
If the average growth rate of the population continues at 1.33 percent, the population of Catanduanes is expected to double after 52 years, increasing by 2,864 every year or about 8 persons per day.

Virac, the provincial capital, was the most populous municipality....
Of the eleven municipalities in Catanduanes, the municipality of Virac, the capital of the province, was the largest in terms of population size, accounting for about 26.5 percent of the total population of the province. This was followed by the municipalities of San Andres (14.6 percent), and Caramoran (11 percent). The smallest was the municipality of Gigmoto (3.3 percent).

99% were Bicolanos....
The predominant ethnic group in this province was Bikol, with 98.7 percent of the total household population, slightly higher than the 1995 figure (97.7 percent). About less than a percent (0.3 percent) classified themselves as Tagalog.

Half of the population below 20 years old....
Catanduanes had a median age of 20 years, higher by one year than the 1995 median age. This implied that half of the total population of the province were below 20 years old.

Sex ratio recorded at 104....
Males have always outnumbered the females since 1970. In 2000, there were approximately 104 males for every 100 females in the province. The same sex ratio was also reported in 1990 and 1995.

More population aged 5-9 years....
In 2000, the age-sex structure of Catanduanes slightly deviated from the usual pyramid shape as shown in Figure 1. The age group 5-9 years slightly protrudes as compared to the lowest age group. This age group also occupied the largest proportion of the total population.

More than two of every five females belonged to the childbearing age group ....
Women in childbearing or reproductive age group (15 to 49 years) comprised 44 percent of the total female population, from 43 percent in 1995.

Over a half of the population belonged to legal age for election....
There were 114,397 persons or about 53 percent of the total population who can participate during election (18 years old and over), with an almost equal number of males and females.

Economically active persons increased by 9 percent....
About 54 percent of the total population or 115,355 persons belonged to productive age (aged 15 to 64 years). This resulted to a nine percent increase from the 1995 figure of 105,864 persons. Two of every five persons were young dependents (aged 0 to 14 years) while more than six percent were old dependents (aged 65 years and above). The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 86, lower than the 1995 ratio of 91. This meant that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 86 dependents, i.e., 75 young dependents and 11 old dependents.

Nine of every ten persons five years old and over had attended school....
About 91 percent of the total population five years old and over had attended school, of which 46.6 percent in elementary; 26.2 percent, high school; 3.2 percent, post secondary; and 14.5 percent with college education or post baccalaureate.

Males dominated among those who had attended school, particularly from elementary to high school levels as well as among college undergraduates.

Single men outnumbered single women....
Among single persons, there was a higher percentage of men (54.3 percent) than women (45.7 percent). In contrast, higher percentages of legally married and widowed were reported for females (50.1 percent and 75.8 percent, respectively) than for males (49.9 percent and 24.2 percent, respectively).

Married persons in 2000 accounted for 44.5 percent of the total population 10 years old and over, slightly lower than the reported figure of 47.9 percent in 1995. On the other hand, never-married or single persons increased, from 45.1 percent in 1995 to 46.0 percent in 2000. The widowed accounted for 4.8 percent in 2000 while those with other arrangements constituted 3.6 percent, up from 1.8 percent in 1995.

Two out of five houses were new....
Majority of the housing units were single houses (97 percent). Over 57 percent of the housing units needed no repair or if needed one, with minor repair only. About 43 percent were built from 1996 to 2000.

Half of the total housing units reported to have a floor area of below 25 square meters. About four percent of the total housing units reported to have floor area of at least 120 square meters.

A number of housing units in Catanduanes were made of strong materials. About 59 percent of the housing units had roof made of galvanized iron, and about 29 percent had outer walls made of wood. Also, about 28 percent had outer walls made of either concrete, brick, and stone while 22 percent, bamboo, sawali, cogon, nipa or anahaw.
