Total population of Bicol reached more than five million in the 2010 Census

As of May 1, 2010, the total population of Region V is 5,420,411, an increase of 734 thousand persons over the May 1, 2000 count of 4,686,669 persons. In 1990, the total population was 3.91 million3

Annual population growth rate of Region V registered at 1.46 percent

The population of Region V increased at the rate of 1.46 percent annually during the period 2000-2010, lower by 0.37 percentage point than the 1.83 percent annual growth rate registered for the period 1990 to 2000. This means that there were approximately 15 persons added per year for every 1,000 persons in the population of Bicol.

Masbate and Camarines Sur posted population growth rates higher than the regional average

Across provinces in the region, Masbate Camarines Sur posted population growth rates higher than the 2000-2010 1.46 percent regional average at 1.66 percent and 1.62 percent respectively. Albay recorded the lowest growth rate among the Bicol provinces at 1.23 percent. On the other hand, Sorsogon exhibited the biggest decline in terms of PGR at 1.31 percent from 2.21 percent during the period 1990 – 2000.

Camarines Sur comprised one-third of the total population of Bicol

Among the six provinces in Bicol Region, Camarines Sur had the largest population with 1.8 million which is one third of the total population of Bicol. Albay had the second largest with 1.2 million. The combined population of these two provinces comprised more than half (56 percent) of the region’s population. The least population was noted in Catanduanes at 246,300 persons.

Legazpi City was the most populated City in Bicol Region

Among the seven cities in Region V, Legazpi City had the largest population with 182,201, which constitute 14.8 percent of the total population of Albay. Naga City ranked second with 174,931 and consist 9.6 percent of the total population of Camarines Sur. City of Sorsogon had the third largest with 155,144. This comprised 20.9 percent of the total population of Sorsogon province. The only city in Region V with a population of less than 100,000 was City of Masbate (85,227).

Thirteen municipalities reached more than 70 thousand population

Thirteen out of 107 municipalities in Region V reached more than 70 thousand population in 2010. Five of these 13 municipalities were in Camarines Sur, four in Albay, two in Camarines Norte and one each in Masbate and Sorsogon.

The top five most populated municipalities in Region V were Daraga (115,804 persons) of Albay, Libmanan (100,002 persons) of Camarines Sur, Daet (95,572 persons) of Camarines Norte, Bulan (93,943 persons) of Sorsogon, and Labo (92,041 persons) also of Camarines Norte.

Meanwhile, the municipalities with less ten thousand population were Panganiban (9,738 persons) and Gigmoto (8,003 persons) of Catanduanes.

Aroroy of Masbate had the highest growth rate at 2.62 percent

There were one city and seventeen municipalities in Region V that registered a population growth rate higher than the national level of 1.90 percent. Of these city/municipalities, Aroroy of Masbate had the highest growth rate at 2.62 percent followed by Monreal also of Masbate at 2.49 percent, Balatan of Camarines Sur at 2.45 percent and Naga City also of Camarines Sur at 2.41.

On the other hand, only the City of Sorsogon (1.42 percent) out of the 7 cities in the region posted a growth rate lower than the regional average of 1.46 percent. Meanwhile, 48 out of the 107 municipalities (44.9 percent) recorded a growth rate higher than the regional average.

Negative population growth rate registered in Jovellar of Albay

The total population of Jovellar in Albay as of May 1, 2010 was 16,899. This figure was lower by 458 persons over the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) population count of 17,357 persons. This translated to an annual population growth rate (PGR) of -0.27 percent for the period 2000 to 2010, lower by 1.82 percentage points from the 1.55 percent annual PGR posted for the period 1990 to 2000. Only Jovellar recorded a negative growth rate in Region V.

Seven barangays in Camarines Sur had population more than 10 thousand

There were seven barangays in Camarines Sur that registered a population more than 10 thousand persons. Of these barangays, five were from Naga City and two from Iriga City and Pili. Concepcion Pequeño of Naga City had the highest population with 21,326 persons which was higher compared to the population of 4 small municipalities in Camarines Sur (Presentatcion, Cabusao, Siruma and Bombon) and 20 municipalities in the whole of Region V.

The other barangays were San Felipe (14,196), Cararayan (12,108) and Concepcion Grande (11,979), all of Naga City. San Jose of Pili came next with 11,431 persons followed by Calauag also of Naga City with 11,022 persons and San Nicolas of Iriga City with 10,528 persons.
